Sea Turtle Nesting Count Update

sea turtle hatchlings on beach

We have new cumulative sea turtle nesting counts to share courtesy of our friends and Rangers at Sebastian Inlet State Park!  The counts are for the entire 3 miles of beach and include beaches to the North and South (Zones A-F).

As of July 3, survey teams have identified:

  • 630 Loggerhead sea turtle nests
  • 104 Green sea turtle nests
  • 1 Leatherback sea turtle nest

The Sebastian Inlet District works in tandem with park officials and employs biologists from Ecological Associates, Inc. (EAI) to conduct daily surveys on the beaches just South of Sebastian Inlet – along a ½ mile stretch starting near McLarty Treasure Museum and continuing South to Ambersand beach access in Indian River County.  District monitoring efforts began on March 1 and will continue through the end of the nesting season in October.  To read more about our ongoing work with EAI, visit HERE.
