Week of May 12: Maybe the fish are on strike?

Angler of the Week: The Snook Queen, aka Erica LaTourette, shows off a catch-and-release redfish caught on live mojarra at the south jetty. Thanks, for the photo, Snookman. Although the image is grainy and the photo might have been taken with a potato. Haha.  Please send us your Angler of the Week photos. We love sharing fishing photos.  Please send in a picture and the details of your fishing trip to the inlet by using the Contact Form on our website.  Pictures work best vertically and if you center the person with their catch, leaving room on the sides.

Today’s (May 12) forecast calls for thunderstorms, a high of 78 degrees, SSE winds of 16 mph and two to three-foot seas. Mostly sunny on Tuesday. Sunny the rest of the week.

Our fishing guide, “Snookman” Wayne Landry says the fishing at Sebastian Inlet is, in his words, “Deadsville.” Read on:

“Good morning, Sebastian Inlet hardcore fishing junkies! I hope everyone had a great weekend, especially the fishing moms out there: Happy Mother’s Day! (After the fact).

This report is a carbon copy of last week’s — much fishing action over the weekend. Deadsville. Primarily due to the poor water quality, dirty and still too cool, 76 degrees as of this writing. The temperature should be in the low 80s by now, and the continuous brisk SSE winds are stirring up the surf and keeping the weeds coming, which means NO bait!

There are a few mullet around, but not what the expected springtime run should be for our area. Also, the mojarra again have gone on vacation. Anglers are having a tough time catching any. And like always, if there’s no bait, there are no fish. But on a good note, the dredge pipes that were in the water at the T-dock have been removed. South side sand pumping is complete, so the area is open again for cast netting. The T-dock remains closed for the duration of the dredging project. Also, while I was out surveying the north jetty last week and speaking with the lead engineer, the jetty repair project is moving ahead nicely. The targeted completion date is July. I hear rumors from anglers that it will be done early, but the Sebastian Inlet District’s website (www.sitd.us) officially lists the end date as July .

That's it for this week. I wish I had better fishing news, but I tell it like it is. Have a great week! And it will get better.” — Snookman.
