Week of June 23: The fishing isn't great but the north jetty reopens on June 30!

Today’s (Monday, June 23) forecast calls for a 36 percent chance of morning thunderstorms, a high of 86 degrees, E winds of 15 mph, and one to two-foot seas. Anticipate partly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday with a high of 85 degrees, mostly sunny on Thursday and isolated thunderstorms on Friday.
Our fishing guide, “Snookman” Wayne Landry, shares what some inlet angler might consider the biggest news of the year:
“Good morning, Sebastian Inlet friends and anglers. I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend! I'm starting this report with GREAT NEWS! No, the fishing hasn't improved, at least not yet, but maybe soon. Here it is: The north jetty will reopen on Monday June 30th around 10 am! Finally, we get to get back out where the fish are, according to the boaters, and the water is deeper and cleaner. Remember, when you go there to fish, carts and equipment are not allowed in the walkway between the railings and painted yellow lines; they must be kept in the center of the jetty out of the safety walkway. Instructions have been painted on the jetty and listed on the fishing instructions on the information board on the way out to the jetty. Please be mindful with the jetty rules. Thanks.
Now, here is your "short" report, as it has been pretty slow due to the dirty water, and low tides in the mornings:
North side: Over the weekend, there weren’t but a few anglers fishing; most I chatted with hadn't caught any fish, except for maybe a couple of sheepshead around the rocks. In the back, west of the tide pool, nobody has been there fishing. Boaters fishing around the tip of the north jetty have been reporting nice catches of snook and quite a few redfish on live baits, mojarra and croakers. Both species are catch and release only.
South side: Dirty, weedy water has made it tough to fish, but anglers have caught catch-and-release snook on both tides using live mojarra, croakers and shrimp. Most have been small, but a few were in the slot, but had to be released. Outgoing tide at the tip they were catching catfish, puffers, black margates and bonnet head sharks.
T-dock area: It has been ‘just alright’ here, nothing to write home about. Incoming tide there have been a few nice snook caught around the cleaning station. Live mojarra have been the bait of choice if you can find them. They are still tough to get as they come and go all the time. During the outgoing tide, when it gets moving a bit and the greenies show up, they have been catching some decent Spanish mackerel on live greenies, and small jigs and swimbaits. The mangrove snapper still aren't biting very well yet as the water is still a bit cool for them, they like it to be 80 or above, and it has been 77 degrees. But they are catching tiny and undersized snapper. Not much else back here.
Surf Area, both sides: The north side surf has been pretty clean, but with the tides being low in the mornings, it hasn't been particularly good, and nobody has been out. The south side has been a blown out dirty weedy mess! They have been only catching catfish, puffers, stingrays and bonnet head sharks.
Well, that's all I have for this week. Not good news on the fishing, but it should improve with the north jetty reopening on June 30: deeper water with more structure to fish.”
