Lovely weather, lousy fishing... and more wind on the way

Angler of the Week: Steven Kinney caught this 28-inch red drum at the north jetty using live finger mullet on the outgoing tide. Please send in your Angler of the Week photos. Today’s forecast (May 26) calls for partly cloudy skies, a high of 86 degrees, SE winds of 19 mph and two to three-foot seas.

Our fishing guide, “Snookman” Wayne Landry says the weather was perfect but not the fishing:

“Good morning, Sebastian Inlet fans and friends; I hope everyone enjoyed the great weekend weather, but the fishing left much to be desired. I don't enjoy writing this kind of report, but  I tell it like I see it — no ‘fluff’ to trick you into going fishing.

Conditions at the inlet last week through the weekend were windy, with 15 to 25 mph SE winds churning the water with silt, along with the immense clots of sargassum weed in and around the entire inlet and the beaches. It made for tough fishing! The fishing was dismal everywhere I  checked while I was down this weekend. There were many people on the north jetty, but I saw nothing except catfish and jacks.

At the south jetty, the outgoing tide was dirty, weedy, and rough. Only a couple of anglers were out, but there was nothing again except for catfish as well. I noted that there wasn't any baitfish around anywhere, except for a few schools of mullet. I did hear that snook and reds were caught at night, with anglers using flairs and swim baits, either tide.

This week, expect more wind – SSE 10 to 20 mph and three to four-foot seas, and thunderstorms by the weekend. If you do go out, find clean water spots and you could score a catch. As a reminder, snook season CLOSES SUNDAY MAY 31 AT MIDNIGHT! The season reopens on September 1. Cheers everyone.” — Snookman.
