The South side of Sebastian Inlet State Park was opened today by officials, as was the day-use area East of A1A and immediately South of the inlet, after damage and safety assessments had been conducted following Hurricane Dorian.

The North Jetty remains CLOSED and the North side of Sebastian Inlet State Park is also CLOSED to the public.  Park rangers are working as quickly as possible to conduct damage and safety assessments, address issues and complete all necessary clean up before re-opening.  A structural assessment of the North Jetty by engineers is pending.

Prior to the storm, Sebastian Inlet District conducted pre-site surveys and in partnership with Florida Institute of Technology, 2,000 feet of beaches to the North and South of the inlet were surveyed for comparison purposes.  The District’s submerged wave and weather gauge collected data for analysis by FIT’s Coastal Engineering and Marine Sciences Department.  Surveys of all important infrastructure at the inlet including the jetties and shorelines were also conducted in partnership with State Park officials.

Today, District and State Park officials conducted a joint post-storm survey noting damage incurred by Hurricane Dorian.  Check back here or on our Facebook page for more updates.

The District has approximately 50,000 cubic yards of sand in its sand storage site, known as the Dredged Material Management Area (DMMA), from the dredging, sand bypass and beach renourishment, and channel maintenance project completed in June.  Those sand resources can be mobilized for dune and beach repair should it be deemed necessary.
