David Barney was elected as a Commissioner for the Sebastian Inlet District, Seat 4, Indian River County, in November of 2022.
A longtime Florida resident, David began visiting Indian River County with his family in the 1960s as a child and has lived in Indian River County since 1973 when his family moved from South Florida to live here permanently.
David holds an Associate of Arts degree from Indian River Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Connie, built a house in Sebastian in 1981 where they still reside. They have two children and two grandchildren, all of whom reside in Indian River County.
An avid surfer, fisherman and coastal advocate, David is very familiar with the coastlines of Indian River and Brevard counties as well as the Indian River Lagoon. He is a member of the Sebastian Inlet Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and served as a Commissioner-appointed member of the Indian River County Beaches and Shores Preservation Advisory Committee from January 2006 through November 2022.
David retired in 2022 from KSM Engineering & Testing in Sebastian after serving 25 years as a Project Supervisor. He still maintains his drafting business (Contemporary Coastal Designs, LLC) which provides house plans and structural engineering services required for building permits.
Since retiring, David now has more time to enjoy surfing, golf, spending time with his grandchildren, and taking extended road trips with Connie in their RV.
