Week of July 22: Summer stock and crystal clear waters at the inlet

Expect to see the typical summer stock out there around the inlet.  Anglers are bringing in Spanish Mackerel on Gotcha lures, small spoons and bucktails.  Blue Runners and Jacks will hit on those too, and you can pick up a few summertime Mangrove Snapper on live shrimp or greenies.  Know you FWC rules, regulations and limits!

Please bear with our local bait shops because it’s summer, and shrimp are far and few between.  When they are stocked, they may be small.  For those of you lucky enough to catch bait fish, please return your unwanted fish back to the sea quickly.

Our angler of the week this week is William Russell with some great offshore action during the Atlantic Red Snapper season on July 19 and 20.  Bill and Matt had an awesome trip with this 37.5 inch Red Snapper, a 15.6 inch Sea Bass, and three catch-and-release Red Groupers.  “We lost another really big fish after fighting for 15 minutes…Just an awesome day.”

We also hear there’s been a ton of sea turtle action in an around the inlet and Park Rangers announced that as of July 7, they had counted 185 Loggerhead, 265 Green and 4 Leatherback sea turtle nests on the North side of the inlet.  Be careful for the baby sea turtles making their way to the ocean, and help us clean up plastic debris on our beaches.

The inlet has been crystal clear and the weather is warm and beautiful.  Get out there for a visit!
